This article uses the theorised sociolinguistic space and scale notions to explore internal migrant worker identity construction in Beijing. Although monoglot (Putonghua Chinese) ideologies often disqualify internal migrant workers' varying linguistic resources, many workers nevertheless acquire a polyglot repertoire to overcome such obstacles.
