This paper discusses how impoliteness is inextricably related to the (co)construction of host, guest, and audience identity in the emergent news genre of news interview as confrontation, broadcast in the U.S. A definition is suggested that states that impoliteness and confrontation may be brought about by mismatches between self and other asserted subject positions.
