Annotation

This study discusses (factors contributing to) the contrasting language vitality and revival paths of the titular languages in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Whilst the titular language already maintained a larger field of use in Azerbaijan's cities in the Soviet era, it clearly holds a superior status to Russian there in urban educational institutions and in the workplace since independence (1991).
