This analysis of Afrikaans-English codeswitching in the informal speech of three age cohorts of White and Coloured Afrikaans speakers from South Africa and Namibia, reveals that codeswitching practices remain to some extent determined by ethnic group membership perceptions rather than by language contact or the typological distance between Afrikaans and English.
