This study demonstrates that non-native listeners, in this case Chinese learners of English in Guangzhou, do not necessarily judge the pronunciation of non-native -in this case Cantonese English- speakers, according to stereotypes, such as the presumed non-release of word-final stops in Cantonese-accented English. Still they are affected by their idealised native English perception.
