This nationwide attitudinal study into the motivation of English as a second language learners in Japan, discusses how the key motivational factor of 'enjoyment of the learning experience' may constitute either an intentionally vague and socially conditioned response, or a genuine language learning commitment, deriving mainly from factors in the learner's closest surroundings or from personal experience.
