This paper argues that in the context of the trifocal linguistic situation in most African countries, characterised by a developing marked bilingualism, erosion of minority languages' cultural values in favour of those of major languages, constitutes one of the main indicators of language shift. Case studies explore the linguistic situation in Tanzania and Botswana.
