This paper describes 'Language and Public Life', a content-based English for academic purposes (EAP) course, conceptualised in terms of the critical EAP dual strategy which promotes academic English as a second language acquisition and critical inquiry of institutional arrangements, and the course's main assignment, the writing of a critical research essay on media coverage of a contemporary event or social issue.
