Using data from a corpus of spoken Hong Kong English, this paper demonstrates that the frequency rates and functions of the discourse particle 'so' differ according to the text type in which it is employed. This emphasizes how contextual cues are essential in the interpretation of discourse particles' pragmatic meanings.
