This study uses computer-mediated discourse analysis to examine the structure and functions of Nigerian hoax mails in the form of deceiving lottery winning announcements and ‘business proposals’, nurtured by economic hardship, sent to university students and staff in Ota between January 2008 and March 2009. The writers appear to employ discourse/pragmatic strategies to sustain receivers' interest.
