Drawing on systemic functional semiotics, news photography, typography, and punctuation, this study argues that thumbnails in the particular discursive context of the online home page of the Sydney Morning Herald between february 2002 and april 2006, function less as hard-news images and more as expression of the expanding linguistic system in computer-mediated communication.
