This study argues that American short-term academic sojourners abroad negotiate expectation gaps through everyday talk within their co-national network, which allows adjustment over time and the development of a more nuanced cultural identity. These findings confirm Y.Y. Kim's integrative theory of communication and cross-cultural adaptation.
