This study uses a narrative approach to examine a speech, given in the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion by Minister Wu Ting-fang in 1900, entitled “the Causes of the Unpopularity of the Foreigner in China”, in which Wu challenged the dominant Western construction of the rebellion.
