According to this corpus analytic study of nominal uses of 'public', three features, encoded by linguistic constructions, characterize the public metonym: definiteness, non-assignability, and anthropomorphism. It is shown how some basic contradictions among these three features, can be explained by describing 'public' as metonymic.
