Arguing that both Foucault's and Mamdani's insights are crucial for the comprehension of the postcolonial African context and the mass media constructions that result from it, this paper empirically links those insights to a case study on the South African press coverage of the controversial rape trial of Jacob Zuma.and the accompanying popular responses.
