This comparative study of news coverage of the 2004 Abu Ghraib prison story by journalists in seven countries (the U.S., Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United States), argues that divergent definitions are best accounted for by social identity theory, though other potential explanations are also taken into consideration.
