This paper argues that the (use of the) African language(s)-in-education policy failure derives from the interplay of various conflicting ideologies (inherited colonial language policies, globalisation vs. localisation, development vs. decolonisation). It advocates a more pragmatic, decentralised, market-oriented perspective on status planning for African languages.
