This paper argues that Indian immigration in early 20th century Cape Town, has to be redefined to include not only the stereotype of the wealthy Gujarati trader, but also workers from Maharashtra and the Punjab. It further points to the severe impact of the permit system and immigration laws and to the migrant (and circular) nature of Indian labour in Cape Town.
