This paper argues that romanticized images of Zimbabwean nationalist leaders and players have been consistently questioned in the African fiction of authors such as Hove, Marechera, Samupindi and Vera. They depict nationalists' contradictory roles, and challenge the official Zimbabwean national triumphalism narrative.
