Annotation

Using a life history methodology, this paper discusses how a trilingual white South African, born and raised in the mainly isiXhosa-speaking Eastern Cape province, is capable of negotiating different identities in certain situations and moving out of the frame prescribed by (post-) apartheid South African society. It considers participant 'real', normal and commonsense constructions against the background of post-colonial South African work on race and 'whiteness'.
