This paper discusses how from earliest colonial Australian encounters on, Aboriginals negotiated the inherent contradictions of supplementing their (mobility requiring) bush food diet with (the assimilation promoting practice of) 'white' food rations distributed at fixed locations by governments, missions and pastoralists.
