This paper adds to the methodology for defining whether a given linguistic feature results from language contact or from language-internal grammaticalization. It thereto explores the presence of a typologically rare phenomenon in neighboring but unrelated languages in a small area of Northern Cameroon: the split coding of subject person and number, in which a verb preceding pronoun codes only person.
