Analysis of a high-level political official's testimony at the 9-11 Commission Hearings reveals three commitment types, within which this paper explores whethers the juxtaposition of the common expression "I think, therefore …" , in terms of (non-) evidential use, functions as a pragmatic trigger for speaker commitment degree and, concomitantly, as a speaker's manipulative attempt.
