Annotation

Drawing on social identity frameworks and communication accommodation theories, this study discusses how doctors use medical progress notes to express their specialty identity and to manage intergroup conflict. As nonaccommodation and interspecialty conflict sometimes override facilitation of patient treatment, intergroup communication in medical records can pose a serious threat to patient care quality.
