This paper deals with media criticism as a particular discourse type that sets out to define journalism and its functions, and who should talk about it. As a test case, this paper systematically explores criticism regarding reportage of the 2004 Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal in the spheres of the news and the journalism trade press, and from a left and a right perspective .
