This paper discusses how students in British 'heritage language' schools, who were allmost all born and raised in the UK, at times assumed their teachers’ positioning of them as (e.g.) ‘Bengali' or ‘Chinese', but at other times disputed the presented notion of national belonging and affiliation to the motherland.
