Discussing English as a second language pronunciation in Vietnam and Sweden, and explaining why Swedish English accents are typically much more intelligible than Vietnamese English accents, this paper argues that the traditionary learner target of approximating native speaker pronunciations ought to be replaced by the more useful target of maximal international intelligibility.
