This work examines the complexities of health communication during periods of serious illness and at the end of life, integrating the medical literature on palliative care with that of health communication researchers who support a biopsychosocial approach of health care. The authors advocate a patient-centered health care approach that acknowledges and tries to reduce the various types of pain that patients may experience.
