This book elaborates a general legal theory of speech, based on linguistic theory and the philosophy of language. Its essential elements are: nonnatural meaning; intent signaling; intent recognition; and convention establishment. It distinguishes actual conduct and the "ideal conduct" described in the American First Amendment's protection of speech.
