Annotation
This book examines the linguistic, political and social causes and impact of the great Greek language controversy in its varied manifestations. Using a broad range of evidence from language, literature, history, and anthropology, the book traces out its effects on spoken and written Greek varieties (in use today). It considers linguistic elite and state efforts to attain language standardization and independence from languages such as Albanian, Vlach, Turkish, and Slavonic.
