Annotation
This is the first of a two-volume foundational study of language. It reformulates speech act theory, arguing that language's primary function lies less in information transfer than in the construction of socially binding commitments or appeals based on the expressed proposition, and also the notion of meaning. The resulting synthesis considers vital aspects of research and theory in linguistics, philosophy, and cognitive science.
