Annotation

This analysis of the usage of the three short Japanese affirmative responses 'hai, ee and un' in formal interviews, demonstrates that although all three tokens are frequently deployed as answers, backchannels and discourse markers, their distribution is defined by speaker roles. Their multifunctionality suggests that they are undergoing a process of intersubjectification.
