Drawing on linguistic pragmatics and critical discourse analysis, this study explores linguistic tools of alienation and empowerment in the Chinese official press narratives on the April 2001 collision between a US surveillance plane and a Chinese F-8 jet fighter, serving a Chinese positive Self-(re)asserting rhetoric.
