This study on formality and informality in safety-critical activities, draws upon a detailed examination of telephone calls between train drivers and dispatchers of the Swedish railway network, to present a middle ground. It proposes a potential theory of formalization, distinguishing four major types of informalizations, and discussing when and why they may be innocuous and when they may be noxious.
