This study deals with indirectness as an identity producing (and unveiling) discourse strategy in everyday social interactions in the African American speech community, pointing out the importance of the audience as co-author and witness. By stressing interaction and power discourses on race, racism and social class, indirectness can be considered as a frame and code for distinguishing and framing intentionality and contending social face.
