This study explores cross-cultural differences in speech styles and functions of speech in interviews conducted with German and Brazilian respondents. It is argued that the results can be partially accounted for by the distinction between cultural and historical backgrounds and via an interrelationship with other research in the domain of cross-cultural pragmatics.
