Annotation

This study argues that Hong Kong speakers of English do not use a wide range of thanking strategies, but mainly stop short at the brief gratitude expressions 'thanks' and 'thank you', often deployed as closing signals. The rare repetitive/responsive gratitude formulae suggest that Chinese interlocutors may be too offish to utter their gratitude overtly and explicitly.
