Annotation

This paper discusses two arguments in support of the need for a maxim of politeness. It evokes a new Gricean theory of politeness, in which the politeness maxim is considered as a supplemental conversational maxim under the Cooperative Principle in rational conversations involving possibly aggressive parties. The maxim's content is then defined face-theoretically, annexing some of Brown and Levinson's ideas into the Gricean theory.
