This quasi-longitudinal study of compliment response behavior in Chinese, discloses drastic changes in the way Xi’an Chinese answer compliments. Namely, instead of massively rejecting compliments as before, Xi’an Chinese now appear to overwhelmingly accept compliments. This change is credited to the impact of Western cultural influences in Xi’an city since the early 1990s.
