This study investigates the representation of pragmatic constraints on (Dutch) speech production within a usage-based phonology framework. It proposes an explanation in which pragmatic constraints constitute lexical organisation categories, and generalisations concerning the linguistic design of specific pragmatic contexts are encoded in cognitive schemas.
