Adding to the debate on the exact nature of face as a universal phenomenon, and the cultural variation within it, this study explores the interactional management of an intercultural encounter between a Zimbabwean English and British English speakers in a community singing group. It is demonstrated how participants’ contributions can be linked to diverging – and possibly conflicting – interpretation frameworks, inspired by culture-specific notions of appropriate self-presentation.
