This study proposes a corpus comparison of British and New Zealand speakers’ deployment of the phrases ‘I don’t know’ and ‘I dunno’, along with their usage in conjunction with discourse markers. It further explores whether the phrase is employed as epistemic or affective device, and the variety of pragmatic or semantic functions it accomplishes.
