An approach to the study of discourse is proposed. The Prague School view on syntax is presented, Kuno's approach is sketched as the starting point for this study, discourse is defined, the property of topicality as an element of discourse structure is analyzed, and the notion of the discourse appropriateness of sentences is presented.
