This paper explores Hjelmslev's Glossematics and Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics and tries to detect similarities and dissimilarities on some issues with which they share a theoretical concern: the notions of function, text, stratification and immanence, the role of paradigmatic relations, and the overall descriptive linguistic goals.
