This paper discusses how question–response sequences in videotaped spontaneous interaction in Yélî Dnye (the Papuan language of Rossel Island) both meet clear universal expectations but also possess some language-specific particularities. The majority of all questions types are effectively information seeking, whilst 19% are requesting repair.
