This paper discusses question–response sequences in spontaneous American English conversation. It is demonstrated that declarative questions are deployed more generally in conversation than suspected by traditional English grammars and questions are employed for a broader range of functions than grammars suggest. The paper also suggests that responses that better sort with the question are preferred.
