This paper argues that in some cases the assumption of rather complex pragmatic processes operating when a suitable sentence comprehension is attempted, is needless: plainly decoding on the semantic level suffices. It explores two well known cases often addressed in the existing pragmatic literature: that of the putative “scalar implicature” and that of numerals in their link to the ‘exactly n’ and the ‘at least n’ interpretations.
