Discussing the linguistic and philosophical problem of reference in relation to the notion of the instantiated pragmatic act or ‘pragmeme’, this study argues that reference is not constrained to the semantics of a language; the problem is rather how to link the language user and his or her language to the situation in which the language is being deployed.
