Annotation
Interview data reveal an overall prevalence of communicative barriers for deaf people in South African educational contexts, causing different dimensions of power relations that may extend beyond school. The South African data also disclose stigmatization of signing and complex communication issues in South Africa's multilingual society. Linguistic ethnography on the contrary has produced interesting “counter-narratives”, giving deaf South Africans “a voice” in mainstream society.
