This paper advocates the employment of other measures than the more traditional functionalist approaches to culture, when examining human error in cross-cultural communication. It proposes an interpretative approach that can offer contextually sense-making analyses. The example discusses how non-native speakers manage accountability in an emergency situation in a naval context.
